Should You Accept Gratituities When It Goes Against Company Policy?

Is is right to accept tips or gratuities from clients or customers if they insist on giving them?

Most of us work for employers who have made it company policy not to accept tips or gratuities from clients or customers.  A tip or gratuity is an additional payment made to service employees for their hard work and effort.  Some employers, such as restaurants and beauty salons, allow tips and gratuities to be accepted.  There are some employers, like supermarkets, health care institutions, and most government employers who do not allow employees to accept tips or gratuities and make it company policy not to allow employees to accept them.

I remember one incident when I was a courtesy clerk for a supermarket where after I carried out his cart full of groceries to his car, he insisted on giving me a five-dollar tip for my help.  Company policy stated not to accept tips or gratuities from customers.  As I tried to politely refuse the tip, the gentleman insisted on me taking it, and I would have been in argument with the gentleman if I refused the tip.  He even told me that he would go to management if I didn't take his tip.  So rather than get into an argument with the gentleman, I reluctantly accepted the tip. 

Did I do the right thing when it is company policy not to accept tips or gratuities?  At that time, I decided that it was best to accept the tip rather than get into an argument with the customer.  After all, isn't the customer always right?  I mean, I didn't want to be pulled into the manager's office because I refused the tip.  I wonder to this day if I had refused to accept the tip, would I have my job or would I have been terminated for arguing with a customer.  I decided it was best to take the lesser of two evils and accept the tip even though it still went against company policy.

In the end, it is not good practice to accept tips and gratuities from customers or clients when company policy states not to.  But if it is going to lead to an argument, it would seem better to accept the tip rather than having a customer or client upset.
